Ajay (Amrita Singh) is a young man who comes from a family of shepherds and barbers. He wants to marry the daughter of the village landlord, but her father does not permit this marriage. Ajay kidnaps Durga (Madhuri Dixit), whom he believes is the daughter of his employer, and orders him to get permission for their marriage. The girl's father, and mother and sisters all think that Ajay has kidnapped someone else and they refuse to let him marry her. Things get complicated when it turns out that Durga is actually the landlord's daughter. When Ajay goes to meet Durga, he sees her kissing another man. He misunderstands the situation and thinks that she is cheating on him. With this misunderstanding, he runs away from there and does not come back to take Durga with him. Durga is made to understand that her lover has eloped with another girl, and she is heart-broken. After some years, Ajay comes back again as a rich man. He falls in love with Durga again and she also trusts him this time. But soon they find out about their past misunderstanding and they break up again. Then Ajay realises his love for her and together they fight against all odds to be together. The songs were composed by Anu Malik, but the background score used in the film was composed by Nadeem-Shravan. Lyrics were penned by Sameer. Barfi! was released on DVD with 5.1 DTS surround sound and Dolby Digital EX 2.0 Stereo English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu audio tracks along with the original stereo soundtrack. The DVD is encoded for region 4 only and has subtitles in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages. It also contains special features like making of the film, deleted scenes etc.The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics upon its release. The review aggregator website ReviewGang gave it a weighted average rating of 5/10 based on 13 reviews. Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave the film a rating of 3 out of 5 saying that, "Barfi! is a sweet, old-fashioned romance with modern sensibilities, and I can see why it connected with audiences. The romance between the leads is genuine and believable." Saibal Chatterjee from NDTV gave it a rating of 2.5 out of 5 saying that, "In the final reckoning, Barfi! turns out to be more interesting as an imaginative reworking of some timeless literary themes than as a Hindi film per se. The more you re-read the book, the more you realise how Barfi! is a film that can easily be understood by anyone familiar with Western literary tropes." Sukanya Verma of Rediff gave the movie a rating of 2.5 out of 5 saying that, "Barfi! is one of those stories that demand your complete attention. It is not an easy watch but it is very rewarding too."
